Co-ProductionsCore Talent Games also uses the co-production technique to get projects made. Co-production is a method commonly used in the free-agent driven world of film and television, and we are quite familiar with it. Two or more companies pool their resources on a project, make "special purpose vehicle" (SPV)—a company purpose-built to own the project (thanks to ISPards for the term)—and then divide ownership of the SPV based on the contribution of the partner companies. (It's also called a "co-development deal" in the game industry.) Some submitters may feel more comfortable doing a co-production with us than submitting a game design for us to option and ultimately purchase. This is fair enough, and sometimes—particularly if the submitter is a more established company, or the game is sufficiently advanced (e.g. to the prototype stage with multiple partners, and technology IP already developed)—it may make more sense for us to consider the co-production route over our standard free-agent designer stream. At this writing we have initiated a number of co-productions already. If you wish, we can consider a project of yours as a co-production—or we may suggest it to you—instead of as a strict design pitch. The initial submission process is the same, either way. |
